Joachim Schmid began his career in the early 1980s as a freelance critic and the publisher of Fotokritik, a German photography magazine. In 1987 Schmid focused on his own art making, based primarily on found photography and public image sources. In recent years, his practise has taken him to the Internet to create provocative works that reflect the future of photography in a networked, global culture. Joachim’s work has been exhibited internationally and is included in numerous collections. In 2007 Photoworks and Steidl published the comprehensive monograph Joachim Schmid Photoworks 1982– 2007 on the occasion of his first retrospective exhibition. His work is included in major museum collections. Joachim was a recipient of a grant from the Mondriaan Foundation in Holland in 1997 and was awarded a grant by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in 2004. In 2009 he founded ABC Artists’ Books Cooperative, an international network of artists who make print-on-demand artists’ books. His current book X Marks the Spot came out at the beginning of November 2013.
Joachim has worked with PICTURE BERLIN since 2010.
