Melissa Steckbauer studied at Utrecht University, the Netherlands and The University of Wisconsin, Madison (BFA, 2008). Her work addresses the expansive properties of “trans” whether we speak to culture, biology, agency, spirituality, or language. The physical nature of the work (how two dimensional materials communicate with and seduce the third dimension) ties a thread to the charm of readily available mediums, such as those intended for mass communication, domestic beauty and usage, and especially textiles. The photographic work – which is but a part, centers on affect in states of relaxation and the desire to be seen. Melissa is the director and founder of the experimental project space, The Wand in Berlin, a member of the collaborative ƒƒ, and a freelance writer for Berlin Art Link. Her work has been featured in Castello di Rivoli, Museum of Contemporary Art, Rivoli; KW, Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin; Le Salon Du Dessin, Paris; Western Exhibitions, Chicago; District, Berlin; and Hasted Kraeutler, New York. Melissa lives and works in Berlin.
