SAMUEL DOWD (UK)

Samuel Dowd’s (UK) work encompasses sculpture, film, collage, photography and experimental writing. His films are predominantly closely observed, non-narrative portraits of singular dwellings, landscapes and their inhabitants: enigmatic, intimate encounters with exhaustively nuanced spaces, forms, subjects and structures. He engages with furnishings, objects, architecture and language as manifestations of thought, of being-in-common.

In recent years Dowd has pursued several exemplary strands of Gesamtkunstwerk – researching those who have taken avant-garde activity into the realm of the domestic and explored radical ways of living and making as the total work of art.

He has exhibited widely at international venues, including: The Serpentine Gallery & The National Portrait Gallery, London; Transmission Gallery, Glasgow; The Mestrovic Pavillion & Galerija Miroslav Kraljevic, Zagreb; The Towner Gallery, Eastbourne; The Kreuzberg Pavilion, Sonntag & WestGermany, Berlin; and das weisse Haus, Vienna. His films have been screened at festivals such as The London Short Film Festival, Aesthetica Film Festival and the Rennes Biennale. He has published books with Formcontent (London), The Permanent Gallery (Brighton) and The Institure for Enquiring Minds (Munich) and has been the recipient of awards from The Henry Moore Foundation, The British Council and The Arts Council, England.

Samuel will be doing a reading for Summer Session 2015.
